5-Day Course

Human Systems Integration is a systems engineering strategy that enhances system performance by integrating technical functions of subsystems with the human work processes those technical functions need to support. Human Systems Integration addresses the design of technological support systems such as interfaces and decision aids. It also addresses human resource issues such as team design, organizational design, staffing, selection and training. The goal of Human Systems Integration is to establish a robust system in which the human capability to perform work is optimized. Requirements, OCD & CONOPS in Military Capability Development

5-Day Course

This course is a 5-day immersion in the development of military capability, with a focus on problem definition, Operational Concept Description (OCD – how the capability, and each element of its solution, will be used), and concept of operations (CONOPS – how the military outcome is to be achieved). No background or previous experience in CONOPS development is required to attend this training. The course content is easily transferable in application to any substantial business system, public infrastructure system, or other large undertaking involving people and technology as a part of the solution. The training is consistent with a systems approach to problem-solving, as advocated by defense administrations worldwide. This approach is an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to the engineering of system solutions (of any type). The approach aims to capture stakeholder needs and objectives and to transform these into a description of a holistic, life cycle balanced system solution which both satisfies the minimum requirements of the stakeholders, and optimizes overall solution effectiveness according to the values of the stakeholders. Stakeholder measures of effectiveness could include, for example, measures of military capability, ease of use, operational availability … and programmatic measures such as investment cost, sustainment cost, National Industry Content …, as applicable. Project risk and opportunity management is a set of management techniques aimed at ensuring that actual and planned project outcomes coincide, or better. As such, project risk management is practiced by the great majority of project planners, project managers and their staff. Risk management is embedded in nearly every facet of planning and implementing a project. This course deals with that extra, formalized set of techniques, which can be applied cost-effectively to manage the risk to those projects, which are unlikely to proceed to plan without specific focus on risk. The majority of public sector defense, aerospace and infrastructure projects above a few million dollars of contract value are in this category, as are many projects for internal customers, and product development projects, in the commercial sector. Requirements Analysis and Specification Writing are sciences practiced by many, mastered by surprisingly few and yet, the payoff from achieving excellence in these areas is large. The two aspects, Requirements Analysis and Specification Writing, are treated as separate but related topics, each in a course of three and two days’ duration. The three-day Requirements Analysis course addresses the techniques used to capture, validate and gain a complete understanding of requirements communicated at all stages of the system life cycle. The two-day Specification Writing course addresses in detail the conversion of individual requirements into effective requirements specifications. The course focuses on the structure and language of requirements specification. The two courses are complementary, with little overlap. They may therefore be taken together, or taken individually. Requirements engineering is practiced by many, mastered by surprisingly few and yet, the payoff from achieving excellence in this field of project activity is large. This course first establishes fundamental principles and relationships as they relate to requirements (plus MOEs, etc), with emphasis on how requirements come into existence: the relationship between requirements and design. The course then addresses the techniques used to capture, validate and gain a complete understanding of requirements, both initially, and at all subsequent stages of a system life cycle. Later, the conversion of individual requirements into effective requirements specifications are addressed in detail. The course focuses on the structure of requirements specification, based on principles and without reference to specific languages. Available world-wide on an in-house basis, and in some countries on a public basis, is the language-independent equivalent of Project Performance International’s 5-day public course in Requirements Analysis and Specification Writing (one day of this latter course focuses on English language requirements specification). The course builds knowledge and understanding regarding structure and language.  course is applicable to the specification of both physical items and software items, from the largest to the smallest, in both procurement and engineering scenarios. The specification of services is overviewed but not covered explicitly in great depth. However, most of the principles and techniques have direct application to the specification of services. Statement of Work

2-Day Course
The two day Statement of Work (SOW) course provides detailed instructions on the conversion of work or service requirements into highly effective SOWs. Issues of structure (organization of information) and the use of (English) language throughout a SOW are examined in considerable detail. A high quality template/guide is provided for the specification of work or services, with examples. The training is strongly workshop oriented throughout. The techniques of SOW writing which are taught have been used to great effect in scenarios which include acquisition, supply, product definition (both hardware and software including the provisioning of services), enterprise internal projects, business analysis and engineering projects of diverse types, large and small.
