Commencing his career in software engineering with Thales Telematics almost 15 years ago, Hanno Retief has held multiple positions in software development, in both technical and managerial roles. Much of his career has been with Actaris (later Itron), one of the oldest and largest energy and water resource management companies in the world.  With Actaris, he worked initially in software qualification and product support, progressing in responsibility and authority to be appointed Software Research and Development Manager. In this position, he worked closely with the product teams, managed third party developers, managed the team and process entirely and managed the software projects with the project office.

Seeking new challenges, Hanno moved to Syntell, part of the EOH group, as Software Development Manager with the mission of bringing external development in-house.  His mandate included taking control of two fledgling departments, nearly doubling the staff complement, implementing structure and process and ensuring the effective running of both teams in the company.

Hanno subsequently joined PPI part-time as a principal consultant, course developer and presenter.  He also provides part-time services to Kani Smart Works (a smart metering and next-level energy management technology company), providing expert services in complex deployment analysis and execution, technical sales, and company representation at conferences and expositions.

Hanno holds a B.Com degree in Economics and is a certified Scrum Master.

He lives in picturesque Cape Town, South Africa, where, combined with his busy professional life, he contemplates how one can make a full-time career out of gliding, running marathons, playing cello and drinking wine (obviously not at the same time, but maybe in that order).
